Here's why hurricane hunters fly their planes in weird patterns into storms
Those flight patterns may look like boxes or stars, but they serve specific purposes for each individual storm.
Hurricane hunters don't fly away from these storms like commercial airlines do. They fly directly into them, but they don't just fly into and around the storms randomly. There is a method to the madness.
There are two distinctive groups of hurricane hunters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Air Force Reserve. Both organizations fly missions into tropical disturbances in order to record invaluable data used by forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.
For the Hurricane Hunters, there are two main types of missions flown, fixed and invest.
Fixed missions are designated for systems that meet tropical cyclone qualifications, such as tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. The main objective is to mark the center of circulation, monitor winds speeds and pressure changes, and other variables that are tricky for satellites in space to measure in full detail.
For fixed missions, 'Alpha' is most common flight pattern used to collect data in a tropical cyclone.
"The Alpha pattern is the standard profile we fly for fix missions so it's the one people are most familiar with seeing from us" Maj. Jeremy DeHart, meteorologist and aerial reconnaissance weather officer with the Air Force Reserve's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, said. "The pattern consists of two legs flown at intercardinal directions, and when complete, looks a lot like the Greek Alpha symbol when including the crossleg."
Cardinal directions are the standard points on a compass: north, south, east, and west. Intercardinal directions are the diagonal points in between: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest.
Interestingly, the bigger, stronger storms tend t(...)

I'm still super new to Python. I'm going over a practice assignment, but I'm getting an error. There's nothing in the literature for the practice assignment that mentions an error. So I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm assuming it's with the print(a+b). But I have no idea what I did wrong.
This is what it told us to do.
y = 3.14159265358979 x = int(y) print(x)
a = 3.14159265358979 b = str(a) print(a) print(b) print(a+b)
f = int(input("Please enter a number: ")) print(f)
But it keeps spitting out the error.

2021.09.20 17:18 Lev0w0 Build Mart - My analysis of problems and possible solutions
Please don’t kill me for not keeping this in the megathread, I wanted to write a lot and it’s difficult to comment the same thing on a bunch of different individual comments. Also this is not a hit on build mart or building games as I just feel there is room for improvement to potentially make more people happy (as there is for all games). And to improve, we need to be aware of what problems there could be in the first place. This is my list of problems that I think people tend not to see with build mart and possible solutions to it.
- No RNG - Solely skill based
Here’s a funny one for all those competitive people who hate build mart. What a lot of people don’t realize about games is that they need a certain amount of luck to become fun for the less skilled players. Take Sky Battle - the nature of the void in that game means even the worst player in MCC could get a lucky shot off of Dream and punt him into instant death. In SoT, a lucky skeleton shot could send anyone into a mess of lava or a team of ravages could send you into a pool of lava with an unlucky tick of damage (cough cough
MCC 17). That’s why less skilled people don’t just roll over and die once a PvP game gets played - there’s a chance for them to win because of luck. However, Build Mart is one of the few completely skill based games in this entire tournament.
If you think about it, there’s no glitches, no teams screwing each other other, and no element of luck in the game. Its all down to how well you and your team can execute your strategy. That’s why can suck though - it makes it exceedingly aggravating for those less skilled in Build Mart because there’s no way to perform above or below your own skill level unless they “just have better teammates lol”. It makes it pretty evident going into build mart whose going to do well and who won’t - other games at least have an opportunity for teams to get a lucky break like a solid punch in TGTOSAWAF and a lucky tnt in Sky Battle. Less skilled teams probably won’t win, but the rng makes for some instances of fun success in the game. On the contrary, when have people really unexpectedly popped off in build mart without something like Technos serious cheese strat that was immediately patched? Plus, as build mart progresses, pop offs become more and more unlikely (more on that in point 3). There might be some fighting between 10-5th but I feel like the gulf from 4th to 1st can be seemingly unsurmountable which discourages many build mart participants to simply stop playing (sound familiar?).
Below is a link that shows how similar people would end up winning very skill based games like parkour warrior and build mart. It’s inherently not a commentary on the game, but it shows that more skill is leading to dominant performances by a select amount of people, at least in S1 build mart. And the only change from that to this is that you can’t get knocked off by someone’s cart - further eliminating RNG https://www.reddit.com/MinecraftChampionship/comments/prishv/the_issue_with_parkour_warrior_and_comparison/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
- Extremely Difficult to Practice
What makes Build Battle different from other skill based games like HiTW or Ace Race is that these have dedicated sections in the practice server for improvement. It’s not that people bad at build mart can’t improve, but it’s more difficult than other games and less worthwhile (point four). See, part of what makes build mart feel so boring to people is that the people who are good at it are REALLY good at it. It’s quite possible to split every participant into a group of “those who are good at build mart and those who are not”. While I wouldn’t say that there’s no such thing as an upset, people can generally tell which team will place high in build mart and which won’t. That’s because, like in parkour warrior, the top people in the game have such developed skills that it makes any competition below feel paltry in comparison. Combine that difficulty in grinding with a completely skill based event and the wall blocking success in build mart can drive some of the most competitive players insane.
- Presence of One Optimal Strat
Although games like battle box and parkour tag might seem similarly based on individual skill, there are still chances for people to do well in those games because of the diversity of strategies. In battle box, you have that interplay between rushing the wool, staying in the back, rushing one side, and flanking. Even a bad team can win if they rush the wool when the other team hangs back in anticipation for a flank. In parkour tag, juking would be infinitely better against a hunter trying to cut you off while it would be infinitely worse against a hunter that just follows you. Vice versa for just running along the maps perimeter. Neither strategy is better or worse, as they are all valid depending on what the other team decides to do. Even SoT can be a toss up of if it rewards more PvP skill (i.e. ravagers in this MCC) or Pakrour ability (piston Parkour for coins and lava Parkour to gold key last MCC). Player skill can make up a lot of differences in strategies, but the presence of counter strats makes it worthwhile for less skilled teams to experiment and try hard even their worst games.
However, the meta in build mart will always be set to one single optimal strategy. Since there’s nothing that changes between games of build mart and no interplay between teams, it’s only about how well your team does personally. Basically, it’s ace race where you’re technically only up against yourself - except in ace race, the map changes so one route isn’t always the path to success. It could be argued that a build is the changing factor in build mart, but the only time a build has managed to disarray someone’s strategy was Cyans “where’s the build” fiasco. Even then, people said that Cyan was doomed from the start and their tactic could never have worked against the floaters strat because of its inefficiently.
Maybe there’d be an opportunity for an unorthodox strategy to cover for team weaknesses, but the skill cap for Build Mart has been set so high that it seems near impossible to compete with teams using the optimal strat as seen by the opinion that Cyans strat was doomed to fail. It’s gotten to a point where a lot of the advice for people who don’t like build mart is to “play with people who like build mart” because it’s the type of game that you can’t really elevate yourself to succeed at - you gotta piggy back off another better player.
It sucks to know that unless you subscribe to the best technique and become exceedingly skilled in it, you have no chance at build mart victory. Once the optimal strategy is established (and it kinda is right now), every team will be forced to duke it out to who can do that strat the best or accept that they’re playing an objectively worse game than the other participants. It’s fair to play to win and for certain games, there will always be an optimal strategy. However, it will become stale to people and I think build mart is being set up for a sad future of never changing at all, further depressing those not good at the game. Even the simple change to elytras and golden builds got some people to perk up and innovate, even if the unchanged core itself is still going to cause problems. Ace Race gets occasional map changes to prevent it from turning into a grind to get the best time on the same map and HiTW has diverse walls to discourage brute memorization - Build Mart needs to be open to similar changes to keep it from being stale and predictable for participants.
- Team based game
Build mart to pretty much has to be a team based game. However, that exacerbates a lot of issues with it - the need for a high amount of skill, difficulty practicing, etc. For one, how do you practice a team game? With your team. However, what happens next MCC? You get a different team. While you can practice building skills outside of MCC, arguably the most important aspect of the game - your teamwork - is absolutely pointless to practice because you just get a different team the next time around. You might not even play build mart that event! It just makes it so much more aggravating to try and perfect.
The completely skill based nature of Build Mart is also exacerbated by the team nature of it. While improving your skills in ace race or HitW can improve your placement for future events, improving at Build Mart is often futile if you’re team isn’t suited for it. Plus, it’s harder to see your improvement when a good chunk of your team needs to work together to get at least a decent score in build mart. There’s no “you’re the best builder” or “you went from 31st to 20th” that is provided in games like Ace Race. That’s the big draw of completely skill based games and Build Mart is lacking it. None of this teamwork stuff is a big smoking gun as to why build mart is bad, but it shows why it’s uniquely polarizing compared to other skill based games.
- Add power ups to Build Mart - this is to mainly eliminate the lack of rng in build mart and the need for a set strategy without overhauling the game. Let teams veer off into other elytra islands or make it so that if they fly through a set amount of rings, they can get a temporary item to potentially boost their productivity (itd also value elytra skills more). Give them a shopping list, an efficiency 1000 pickaxe, a few enderpearls, a chicken bomb to collect items, etc. It could also provide “power downs” like a stick to knock someone out of the area, a arrow to steal one of their items, or a snowball to stick a player to the floor, requiring someone to free them or take over getting their supplies for a second (kind of like punching in TGTOSWAF). That would give a slight additional objective to build mart and require teams to make some more diverse decision making than “hey get this and get that for ten minutes”.
- Make certain factors of build mart random - another one to increase rng and discourage perfecting one strategy. The placement of islands, the amount of build plots, and other base factors could be randomized across every two or three events to make Build Mart feel like a different game while still remaining the same. Just as Ace Race on Pythons Crypt feels diffferent than Space Race, you could completely change Build Mart by having there only be one available plot, islands a lot more difficult to get to, ores mixed with stone, etc. so that competitors don’t feel like it’s the same irritating Build Mart every time. Furthermore, it could place more value on different skills like having a more elytra themed map or a more communication heavy one by needing everyone to collaborate on one plot.
- Add another building game to MCC - I’m not going to make up a new game as a bunch of people have done it for me. The thing is I think part of the push back agaisnt build mart removal is that it’s the only game non PvP or Pakrour people can play to help their placement. That’s why it gets played late and becomes such a morale boost/drag on the certain teams . A simple building game has become the personification of the “non-PvPers and non-Pakrourers“ last stand which makes the whole thing a lot more serious than it needs to be. So, to reduce the polarity of it as a game choice, I feel there should be more opportunity to have build mart as a solely skill based game while there is a more chaotic building game for people looking to have some more fun. That way, it wouldn’t be seen as the thing everyone needs to pick if they want to not have a PvP or Parkour game - hopefully keeping it as a more once in a while game for big jumps in placement like Sg used to be (although that had some obvious problems). It would also help give rewards to people who practice other skills in Minecraft. Not a perfect solution and I’m in most favor of this going along with some build mart changes, but it would help build building rep in MCC while keeping the “fan favorite” game.
